All set for the world athletics final
September 21st 2007 16:15
Ok so many of the top draw stars wont be in attendance this weekend; Veronica Campbell, Bernard Legat, Tirunesh Dibaba, Tyson Gay, Jeremy Wariner Liu Xiang and Kenenisa Bekele will all miss out (but the last four names WILL be in Shanghai on 28th September) among others but lets focus on the names that will be there.
100m world record holder Asafa Powell will look to make himself $30,000 richer for under 10 seconds worth of work as he goes up against Britain’s Marlon Devonish (10.06 this year) and sub 10 pair Olu Fasuba and Francis Obikwelu (though neither have managed the feat this year).
In the absence of Veronica Campbell, Alyson Felix elects to step down to the 100m leaving her favoured event the 200m wide open.
Kim Guevert, Lashauntee Moore or Debbie Ferguson-mckenzie will look to capitalise.
The british duo of Christine Ohuruogu and Nicola Sanders will look to get one over on Sanya Richards in the 400m who looked imperious on her way to winning the Golden League jackpot.
Wallace Spearmon is the standout name in the 200m and Leshawn Merritt likewise in the 400m with his 43.96 clocking in Osaka.
Janeth Jepkosgei is the major name in the women’s 800m and the 1500m looks to be a straight fight between Yelena Soboleva and Maryum Yusef Jamal.
Soboleva has the faster time but Jamal has the edge in head to head’s between the two.
The 800m and 1500m male fields seem bereft of star quality and only the name of Australian Craig Mottram is seriously recognisable in a 3000m field that includes young Joseph Ebuya and Mo Farah.
Meseret Defer will also be looking to secure a long distance win here.
110m hurdles legend Allen Scott continues to defy the onward march of time and in the absence of Liu Xiang will have young Dayron Roubles (13.05 this year) for company along with ex world champion Ladji Doucoure and bronze medallist David Payne.
Michelle Perry will look to get back to winning ways in the 100m hurdles when she goes up against her her chief tormentor during her dip – Susanna Kallur.
400m hurdles world champion Kerron Clement takes on Bershawn ‘Batman’ Jackson and Felix Sanchez as he looks to begin his dominance of the event.
In the women’s side there is an intriguing race between Jana Rawlinson, Tiffany Williams and Anna Jesien.
Whilst many major stars are missing from the track events it is a different story in the field where many of the top names are eager to add to their list of wins this year.
In the mens high jump Stafan Holm will look to gain revenge over current world champion Donald Thomas while Blanka Vlasic will look to continue her domination over the women’s event.
Tero Pitkamaki and Andreas Thorkildsen renew their rivalry in the javelin whilst Stuttgart is a home venue for Christina Obergfoll and she will hope to secure a win infront her of her countrymen.
Another German in action is Franka Dietzsch in the women’s discus.
Other notable throwers in action are Reese Hoffa of the USA in the men’s shot putt and Gerd Kanter in the Discus.
Yelena Isinbaeva will look at add $30,000 to the $500,000 she scooped last Sunday for winning the Golden League jackpot and fellow Russian Tatyana Lebedava goes in the long jump.
