Who is your athlete of the year?
October 17th 2007 08:15
It’s that time of year once again when the days are getting shorter (or longer, depending on what hemisphere you currently occupy) and the search is on for the male and female athletes of the year.
This year is unusually difficult in the fact that there is no single stand out contender.
Tyson Gay for winning the world championship sprint double?
Asafa Powell for breaking the 100m world record?
Bernard Legat for securing the 1500m and 5000m double?
Keninesa Bekele secured the 10,000m title in impressive form and who can forget Haile Gebrselassie – the man with the impossible to spell surname but more importantly the owner of the new marathon world record?
Jeremy Wariner managing to go yet another season undefeated over 400m in which he edged ever closer to Michael Johnson’s world record?
The women’s decision is even harder, Allyson Felix for winning 3 gold medals at the worlds? Sanya Richards for her golden league win and spectacular return to form?
Speaking of spectacular returns what about Christine Ohuruogu or Jana Rawlinson?
Blanka Vlasic was incomparable in the high jump and looks set to set her very own world record in the very near future.
Janeth Jepkosgei won the 800m world title from no where and has since been in barn storming form in the event – bringing back a whole new era of front running.
Carolina Kluft also deserves a mention in the decathlon – her 2007 world title continuing her complete domination of the event since 2003
Finally what about Meseret Dafar, owner of the 5000m world record and world title as well as the 3000m indoor record and the 2 mile record this year?
Will there be anybody out there who thinks that Marion Jones will be the most remembered athlete from 2007 – albeit for entirely the wrong reasons?
Decisions, decisions!!
Over to you………..
