The Russian soared to a mark of 4.95m to add 2cm to her own record in Donetsk, Ukraine in her first competition of the year.
Isinbayeva’s mark is the 4th world record set so far this year with Susanna Kallur rewriting the 60m hurdles record book in 7.69s, Yelena Soboleva setting a new mark in the 1500m (3:58.05) and the little run 4x800m record also being revised recently.
That wasn’t the only action though as in Birmingham, England Kenenisa Bekele sought to get in on the record breaking act and in doing so erase the venerable name of Haile Gebrsalassie from the 2 mile world best.
Eight minutes and 4.35 seconds later Bekele had taken yet another of Gebrsalassie’s marks having taken the 5000m in 2004 and the 2000m last year to complete a hat trick at the same track.
Elsewhere, in Fayetteville to be precise Adam Nelson produced the 3rd furthest shot putt of all time.
The Arkansas native sent the shott out to 22.40m, the furthest throw since 1989.
Wallace Spearmon elected to make his first 200m appearance of the season at the same meet and he sped to a special 20.19s – just 9 hundredths off of his American record and the 5th fastest time of all time.
Another 200m race, all be it several thousand miles away saw Australian Daniel Batman (20.81) defeat world and olympic 400m champion Jeremy Wariner (20.93) at the Sydney Grand Prix.
Wariner goes in the 400m this Friday at the Melbourne Grand Prix where he will hopefully be joined by 100m world record holder Asafa Powell.
Powell was due to compete in Sydney but pulled out after falling down the stairs at home, a fall which required stitches.
Athletics Australia track agent Maurie Plant, who has escorted Powell while in Australia, admitted:
“When I saw him train on Monday I was very encouraged and would have said he was 80 per cent likely to race on Thursday but after the Tuesday session he had a bit of trouble from the knee and I’d rate him 30 per cent chance of starting.”
