The age of wisdom?
August 8th 2007 10:15
With the Athletics World Championships a little over 3 weeks away the world number one 100m and 200m sprinter American Tyson Gay has expressed his surprise that British sprinter Marlon Devonish has elected to forgo his favoured 200m distance and instead opt for the 100m in Osaka.
Gay is widely expected to follow in the footsteps of the drugs tainted Justin Gatlin and claim the sprint double this year.
He is simply peerless over 200m and only Jamaica’s Asafa Powell can realistically challenge him in the 100m.
However it’s the guys 2-3 metres behind Gay at the finishing tape that Devonish is worried about.
At 31 in athletics terms he’s no spring chicken and the 200m this year is by far the most competitive event with Gay leading the way with a 19.62 at the US championships.
Behind him and attending the championships are Jamaican Prodigy Usain ‘lightning’ Bolt (19.75) and fellow American Wallace Spearman (19.82).
Compare those times to the relatively modest 20.33 that Devonish notched up at the European Cup in June and you have your answer.
Having recorded a new personal best of 10.06 a few weeks ago the GB sprinter has a much better chance of making the final and possibly medalling in the shorter event.
Add into the equation the 4x100m relay which Great Britain has developed a happy knack of finishing on the podium in recent times and it becomes obvious that the 200m is superfluous to the Coventry Godiva Harrier.
