Day 7 from Osaka

August 31st 2007 18:19
America’s good showing in the sprint events continued on day 7 as both Alyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner struck gold.

Wariner, the defending world and Olympic champion over 400m and the 3rd fastest ever over the distance was never in serious danger of slipping up here despite compatriot Leshawn Merritt matching the Texan stride for stride for much of the first 350m of the race.

However Wariner’s last 50m is what keeps him top of the world and it he proved it again here winning comfortably in 43.45.

Merritt took silver in 43.96 and a USA 1-2-3 was completed by Angelo Taylor who came third in 44.32.

In the women’s half lap Felix ran the fastest race in over a decade, winning by half a second in 21.81.

100m champion Veronica Campbell could only produce 22.34 in response to take silver whilst surprise package Susanthika Jayasinghe ran 22.63 to add a world championships bronze medal to the bronze she won at the 2000 Olympic games.

The men’s 110m hurdles also had a strong american look to the medallists with Terrence Trammell (12.99) and Michael Payne (13.02) taking silver and bronze.

But neither could contend with the strong run made from the outside lane by China’s Olympic poster child Liu Xiang who went away over the final two hurdles to take gold in 12.95.

In the field events Russian Tatyana Ledebeva’s attempt to add the triple jump crown to the long jump title she won just days ago and in turn become the first athlete to complete a horizontal jumps double was denied at the last by Yargelis Savigne of Cuba whose 15.28m leap dwarfed Ledebeva’s best effort of 15.07m.

Greece’s Hrysopiyi Devetzi took bronze with a first round effort of 15.04m.

The women’s Javelin provided one of the bigger shocks of these championships with Czech Barbora Spotakova avenging her defeat at the European championships last year by the German Christina Obergfoll.

Spotakova lead from the start with a first round national record of 66.40m and then added to it in the third round with 67.07m. Obergfoll was forced to settle for the silver with a best of 66.46m whilst fellow German Steffi Nerius added to her increasing collection of bronze medals with 64.42m.
