Days 1,2,3 in Osaka

August 27th 2007 16:15
Well its certainly been an interesting last few days!

The first day of the championships saw Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba triumph in gutsy circumstances in the 10,000m.

Dibaba looked well placed after 6000m but suffered a collision with team mate Mestawet Tufa who eventually had to drop out.

The twenty one year old fell and was winded, she spent the next few minutes franticly rubbing her stomach whilst struggling to regain her momentum and rhythm.

Unperturbed though she chased the leading pack relentlessly and was back in the lead with jut 400m to go.

Dibaba crossed the line in 31:55.41 to successfully defend her title.

Elsewhere Reece Hoffa won the shot putt by a full 43cm with a 22.04m effort with fellow American and defending champion Adam Nelson taking the silver.

Day 2 saw American Tyson Gay crowned as the fastest man over 100m. The American suffered his usual patchy start but surged past Jamaican world record holder Asafa Powell in the last 40m, stopping the clock in 9.85s (-0.5m/s).

It got worse for Powell - he clearly gave up in the final stages and allowed Bahamian rookie Derrick Atkins through to snatch the silver medal.

Later Powell admitted that once he realised that he was out of contention for the gold conceded the race but promised to make amends by running a new world record before the end of the season.

As for Gay he will now go into the 200m as a heavy favourite to complete the double.

The Blonde bombshell Carolina Kluft set a new European record that ranks second on the all time list in winning the Heptathlon.

The Swede recorded a heroic 7032 to win from Ukrainian Lyudmila Blonska (6832) and Kelly Sotherton who won the battle of the Brits between herself and 21 year old Jessica Ennis to snatch the bronze medal.

The women’s hot putt was won by New Zealand’s Valerie Vili who upset defending champion and world leader Nadezhda Ostapchuk of Belarus with a throw of 20.54m.

The highlight of Day 3 had to have been Jamaican Veronica Campbell’s 100m victory by the narrowest of margins.

With a winning time of 11.01 the officials took over 10 minutes before declaring Campbell the winner of a blanket finish, with Lauryn Williams (11.01) and Carmelita Jeter (11.02), both of the USA picking up the minor medals.

So its honours even between Jamaica and The USA in the sprint distances.

In the men’s 10,000m Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia secured his third consecutive world title with an impressive run of 27:05.90.

Fellow Ethiopian Silesi Sihine grabbed the silver with Kenyan Martin Irunqu Mathathi took bronze.

The triple Jump saw little fancied Portuguese Nelson Evora set a new national record of 17.74m on his way to the gold medal.

Brazil’s Jadel Gregorio took silver with a best of 17.59m and defending champion Walter Davis of the USA had to settle for bronze with 17.33m.

There was a new championship best set in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with Yekasterina Volkova taking the gold for Russia in 9:06.57.

It really was a team effort though with all 3 of the Russians sharing the lead at different stages and it was fitting that second place went to Russian Tatiana Petrova in a personal best time of 9:09.19.

Kenya took yet another bronze medal in the distance races through Eunice Jepkorir in a time of 9:20.09.

Finally the men’s hammer throw was successfully defended by Ivan Tsikhan of Belarus with a last round throw of 83.63m.

Stay tuned for more action from Osaka!
