Golden League Round 6: Berlin
September 16th 2007 13:25
The second installment of the Golden League double header takes place in Berlin this afternoon and all eyes will be on those going for the jackpot.
Sanya Richards and Yelena Isinbaeva both require just one more win tonight to claim their share of the golden league jackpot but neither will have it entirely there own way.
Richards has to contend with the strongest field she has faced all year in the women's 400m with world champion Christine Ohuruogu, Osaka silver medalist Nicola Sanders and Bronze medalist Novlene Williams also on the start list.
In the women's pole vault Isinbaeva will have to hope the woman she succeeded as world number one way back in 2004 will not come back to haunt her here.
Svetlana Feofanova has had to live in her compatriots shadow for much of the last 3 years but having only lost out to Isinbaeva on friday via the unfortunate method of count back she will have renewed confidence of getting back to her personal best height of 4.88m and with it announce herself as a true rival to the world record holder.
If both win they will divide the $1 million jackpot equally between them.
If one of them wins and the other loses then the winner will scoop the entire prize.
However if neither of them win then and Croatian high jumper Blanka Vlasic wins then all 3 of them will finish having won 5 meetings and thus share half the original total ($500,000) between them equally.
The final possibility if that all 3 ladies could lose and Richards and Isinbaeva by virtue of having won 5 meetings already would share the reduced jackpot between them.
All sounds fairly complicated!
Elsewhere in the meet Jeremy Wariner returns to competition after successfully defending his 400m world crown last month.
He will go up against bronze medalist Angelo Taylor as well as Swedish finalist Johna Wissman who ran the 200m on friday in 20.50.
Bernard Legat will also feature in the 1500m fresh from attaining immortal status amongst the middle distance fraternity for completing a 1500m/5000m double last month.
The final star attraction of note is Kenyan 800m Janeth Jepkosgei, the young woman who captured world gold last month by executing the bravest piece of front running ever seen at a global championships.
It all kicks off at 17:45 and can be seen on Setanta Sports.
