Golden League Round 5: Brussels

September 14th 2007 15:37
Round 5 of the IAAF Golden League in Brussels sees Asafa Powell race in the 100m for the first time since setting a new world record in Reiti just 6 days ago.

The Jamaican cemented his reputation as the fastest man on the planet with a 9.74 ( 1.7m/s) run in Italy easing down in his heat, he then recorded a 9.78 in the final with 0.0m/s wind reading suggesting he can go even faster.

He is joined on the start line by Nigeria’s Olusoji Fasuba and Portuguese Francis Obikwelu as well as fellow Jamaica Michael Frater.

In the women’s equivalent Veronica Campbell returns to competition after resting in the wake of her exertions in Japan last month.

She faces French woman Christine Arron – winner of the last golden league race as well as world silver and bronze medallists in the form of Lauryn Williams and Carmelita Jeter.

After beating Christine Ohuruogu so comprehensively last week, Sanya Richards goes up against the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers from the world 400m final as Nicola Sanders, Noveline Williams and Natalya Antyukh are all in attendance.

Richards needs to win these last 2 rounds of golden league competition to be eligible for a share in the $1 million jackpot available for winners of all 6 meetings.

The only other athlete still in with a shot is Yelena Isinbaeva in the pole vault and its hard to think of anything more certain in life that her finishing the night needing only one more victory to add the jackpot to her world title and world record.

Michelle Perry was eliminated from the running last week in the 100m hurdles after she finished 3rd to Susanna Kallur and Delloreen Ennis-London and will be looking to gain revenge here as all three are scheduled to clash in the high hurdles.

Yet another world champion in attendance is Blanka Vlasic in the women’s high jump who will look to achieve yet another 2 metre plus clearance to add to the 2.04m she achieved last week in Zurich.

The men’s 200m looks set to be one of the highlights of the meeting with last week’s winner Xavier Carter renewing his rivalry with Usain Bolt and Wallace Spearmon.

Also lining us is Sweden’s Johan Wissman who has been better known as a 400m runner this year – making the final last month, and Rodney Martin who just missed out on a medal in Osaka.

Finally in the men’s javelin Thorkildsen Andreas and Pitkämäki Tero renew their rivalry.

Thorkildsen triumphed last week by 2 metres with 89.51m as both men finished well clear of the competition.

It all kicks off tonight at 7:10pm tonight and can be seen on Setanta Sports.
