Last stop: Deagu, South Korea.
October 2nd 2007 19:09
So now the end is near and when night falls on Daegu, South Korea tomorrow the 2007 outdoor athletics season will disappear with the setting sun.
Considering the lateness of the ‘colourful athletics meeting’ as its known it is a testament to the resourcefulness of the meeting organisers that such a strong line up has been assembled with many stars already into their end of season break.
One of tomorrows competitors, Wallace Spearmon will have very fond memories of the Deagu track.
It was here late last year that Spearmon recorded a stunning 19.65 200m personal best – a result that placed him 3rd on the all time list behind Xavier Carter and the legendary Michael Johnson.
This year the American sprinter contests the 100m as well as the half lap and he’s in good form over the shorter dash having ran a 9.96 personal best last Friday in Shanghai on the way to handing a surprise defeat to training partner and world champion Tyson Gay.
Elsewhere Liu Xiang is the standout name in the men’s track events – the world record holder, world and Olympic champion will look to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible after being handed a surprise defeat on home soil last Friday by Cuban Dayron Robles.
In the 400m hurdles Olympic champion Felix Sanchez will be joined by James Carter who placed 4th in Osaka and both men will look for a good result to end their season’s with.
In the women’s section Lauryn Williams and Carmelita Jeter – the 2007 world silver and bronze medallists respectively over the 100m will resume their rivalry here over the short sprint before Jeter tries her hand at the 200m later on.
The presence of Yelena Isinbaeva in the pole vault is usually enough to put the Korean crowd in good voice as the Russian looks to chalk up another victory in a season that has landed her the world title and the golden league jackpot.
But victory is much less of a certainty nowadays thanks to the rejuvenated form of former world record holder Svetlana Feofanova who knows that Deagu represents her last chance this season to defeat her bitter rival.
Fellow Russian Tatyana Lebedava is the other big name at the competition where she will be starring in the long jump – an event in which she is the world champion.
So enjoy the action – it’s going to be a long winter!
