Asafa Powell goes from zero to hero in 9.74 seconds!
September 9th 2007 16:24
Asafa Powell today broke the 100m world record by a staggering 3 hundredths of a second at the IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Reiti, Italy.
His time of 9.74 seconds was run with a 1.7m/s tailwind aiding the Jamaican in the second of two heats.
It is the 2nd time he has set a new world record.
His first came in 2005 in Athens where he clocked 9.77 seconds, he then went on to equal it twice the next season at Gateshead, England and Zurich, Switzerland.
The result makes good on a promise made by the athlete just days after losing out to American Tyson Gay in the 100m world championship final.
He said, "I didn't get to run fast at these world championships but I am going to bounce right back," Powell said. "I am going out there and I am going to give a world record."
Bounce back he certainly has and Powell must now be wondering what if he had produced this scintillating run just 14 days ago in the heat of Osaka.
In the wake of his defeat by Gay he was accused of choking at major championships by various sections of the media and his performance here may add fuel to the claim that he can only run fast without pressure.
However what is undisputable is that Powell is the fastest man on earth, the margin in which he has broken the world record is the biggest since Maurice Greene took the record from 9.84 to 9.79 in 1999.
Just to make things that little bit more incredible Powell appeared to ease up before the line during his world record run and in the final a few hours later he recorded a 9.78 with 0m/s wind!!
Now the only question over Asafa Powell appears to be just how fast can he go?
