Who is the greatest ever?

October 20th 2007 14:40
We all know that Mo Greene famously called himself the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time) but If the best there has ever been over 100m had a race – who would win?

Asafa Powell may be the world record holder now but would Jesse Owens be able to run even faster than the Jamaican if he had the same technological advances in training, footwear and track as today’s sprinters do

Who is your athlete of the year?

October 17th 2007 08:15
Meseret Dafar
It’s that time of year once again when the days are getting shorter (or longer, depending on what hemisphere you currently occupy) and the search is on for the male and female athletes of the year.

This year is unusually difficult in the fact that there is no single stand out contender

Victor Conte
It seems Victor Conte may finally have found his place in the history books, but it won’t have anything to do with the band he played bass for in the 70’s or for his running of the very successful Bay Area Laboratories Co-operative.

Put simply, he is simply sports greatest ever whistle blower

In a week that has seen the public image of athletics tarnished still further by careless athletes and a naïve media its worth trying to put some perspective on the issue of drug taking in sport.

Is athletics as dirty as it seems or is it a case of athletics being a victim of its own forthrightness in the war on doping

In light of his recent comments regarding Marion Jones, the IAAF president Lamine Diack would do well to remember that even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut.

Speaking to the press he commented, “There is a feeling of satisfaction as it shows that it doesn't matter how big a name you are if you are doping, we will get you in the end

Marion Jones admits to taking THG.

October 8th 2007 13:27
Marion Jones
Olympic legend Marion Jones has sensationally admitted to using performance enhancing drugs – a revelation that could see her stripped of the five medals she won in the Sydney Olympic Games and the thirty one year old could face possible jail time.

She admitted that in the run up to the Sydney games she took a banned substance known as ‘the clear’ which is otherwise known as THG – the same drug that sprinters Dwain Chambers and Kelli White and shot putters Kevin Toth and CJ Hunter were suspended for using

A splendid 19.88 by Wallace Spearmon in the 200m and a world junior record in the steeple chase were the highlights of the final track and field meeting of the year in Deagu, South Korea.

Just a year after becoming the 4th fastest man in history over the half lap distance with a 19.65 run at the same meet last year Wallace Spearmon claimed a sprint double after winning the 100m in 10.11 and the 200m in an incredibly swift 19.88

Haile Gebrselassie
Just a day after speeding to a new marathon world record of 2:04:26 Haile Gebrselassie was speculating on breaking the record again,

“I can run 2:03, I have that feeling. It is possible to run 2:03 here in Berlin. It will happen one day

Last stop: Deagu, South Korea.

October 2nd 2007 19:09
So now the end is near and when night falls on Daegu, South Korea tomorrow the 2007 outdoor athletics season will disappear with the setting sun.

Considering the lateness of the ‘colourful athletics meeting’ as its known it is a testament to the resourcefulness of the meeting organisers that such a strong line up has been assembled with many stars already into their end of season break
