Athletics News - August 2007

Day 7 from Osaka

August 31st 2007 18:19
America’s good showing in the sprint events continued on day 7 as both Alyson Felix and Jeremy Wariner struck gold.

Wariner, the defending world and Olympic champion over 400m and the 3rd fastest ever over the distance was never in serious danger of slipping up here despite compatriot Leshawn Merritt matching the Texan stride for stride for much of the first 350m of the race

G.B 1-2 SHOCKER: Day 5 in Osaka.

August 29th 2007 16:27
There really is only one place to start in covering last nights events isn’t there!

Christine Ohuruogu - wins the 2006 Commonwealth title and then is banned for 12 months for missing 3 random drugs tests, a broken woman she struggles to survive both financially and athletically

Day 4 From Osaka

August 28th 2007 20:56
Day 4 certainly belonged to Kenyan Janeth Jepkosgei who produced one of the best displays of front running ever to grace these championships on the way to winning the women’s 800m in a world leading time of 1:56.04

Such was the ferocious pace set by Jepkosgei that many world class athletes simply could not get near her and faded badly before the finish

GB Athletics in optimism shocker!

August 24th 2007 02:20
Enough with the doom and gloom, enough with the pessimism. A little optimism please!

Ok, So Team GB isn’t going to be returning back to these shores in two weeks time heavily weighed down by metals of the gold, silver and bronze variety whatever the media might expect

With just one day to go till it all kicks off we take a look at what the women’s field events have to offer.

The High Jump is surely the most eagerly anticipated of all the women’s field events

Tirunesh Dibaba
With the track in Osaka reputed to be extraordinarily fast and wind conditions funnelled by the stadiums unique design, a raft of quick times are expected this year.

Having seen what the men have to offer it’s now time to turn out attention to the female athletes being called to their marks from this Friday

With just 3 days to go lets take a closer look at the men’s field events.
Norweigian Andreas Thorkildsen has a seasons best of 89.49m

The Hammer throw is one of the most open events of the championships with 9 men having thrown beyond 80m this year. Better yet 3 men have beaten the 82m mark this year. Vadim Devyatovskiy leads the world standings with an 82.94m throw but fellow Bellarussian Ivon Tikhon (82.58m) and Slovenian Primoz Kosmus (82.30m) are close enough to give the world leader a strong challenge

Born to win?

August 17th 2007 11:38
Are world class athletes born or are they made? The classic nature versus nurture debate rages on with compelling arguments for both sides being made.

In sprinting it is an extremely rare event to have a white person in the 100m final, in the long distance races it is highly unlikely we are going to have a single white world champion, in the Javelin it is highly unlikely we are going to have a black world champion etc

Christine Ohuruogu recieving her medal at the Commonwealth Games
For Christine Ohuruogu the World Championships represent far more than a global championship.

It represents the chance for vindication

How to beat injury

August 14th 2007 01:30
Now I’m aware that it’s much easier to pinpoint the problem than it is to actually solve it so here’s my attempt at keeping our top athletes fit enough to get onto the podium.

Very rarely in track and field does an injury occur without prior warning

Why GB Athletes dont win medals!

August 13th 2007 01:30
As Osaka (god, how many times have I written that word already!) approaches we in the U.K are once again having to come to terms with the majority of our decent athletes (and we don’t have many of them!) being injured or coming back from a long lay off.

Now I know that athletes from other countries get injured as well – The women’s Javelin champion Osleidys Menéndez has withdrawn from the championships with an Achilles injury and Asafa Powell missed the 2005 World Champs in Helsinki with a groin tear but surely GB gets more than its fair share

Can Gay go the distance?

August 10th 2007 10:30
Tyson Gay celebrated his 25th birthday yesterday but you get the feeling that the birthday cake is on hold until the end of the season.

The American has his sights clearly set on the land of the rising sun where he will hope to conclude his rise to global superstardom by repeating the 100m/200m double fellow American Justin Gatlin won last time around in Helsinki

Powell with point to prove

August 9th 2007 11:02
For Asafa Powell Osaka represents the chance to finally gain the respect and world title that he has always deserved.

Its amazing that only 4 years ago in Paris Powell was disqualified from a quarter final in circumstances better remembered for Jon Drummond's infamous 'I did not move' speech than the eventual winner

Tyson Gay and Marlon Devonish
Gay beats Devonish at Sheffield GP
With the Athletics World Championships a little over 3 weeks away the world number one 100m and 200m sprinter American Tyson Gay has expressed his surprise that British sprinter Marlon Devonish has elected to forgo his favoured 200m distance and instead opt for the 100m in Osaka.

Gay is widely expected to follow in the footsteps of the drugs tainted Justin Gatlin and claim the sprint double this year
