2 hour marathon possible says Gebreselassie
October 3rd 2007 11:01
Just a day after speeding to a new marathon world record of 2:04:26 Haile Gebrselassie was speculating on breaking the record again,
“I can run 2:03, I have that feeling. It is possible to run 2:03 here in Berlin. It will happen one day.”
“I think Berlin offers the best conditions for a World marathon chase – the course, the weather conditions, the spectators. So I think that when World records will be broken in the future it will happen in Berlin.”
However the 34 year old didn’t stop there and if his predictions come to fruition neither will the world record,
On being asked by a journalist if the mystical two hour mark will be broken he said,
“Yes, of course. That will happen. But I do not know when – may be it will take 20 years or may be 40.”
Gebrselassie’s latest feat is his 24th world record or world best he has set in his illustrious career that includes Olympic and world titles on the track as well as on the roads.
His place in history is something that has been reserved for a long time but after setting the benchmark in the premier distance event the Ethiopian can rest assured that his name will be remembered and revered in distance circles for generations to come,
“I am happy that I have finally broken the World marathon record since my name is now on this record list. And in 100 years people will still see that and say, ‘ah this was Haile Gebrselassie’.”
